Diesel Engine Cylinder Output Balancing Experiments Underway

Barron Associates and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have initiated testing and data collection in support of Army-funded research into Adaptive Inter-Cylinder Output Balancing for Diesel Engines.  Cylinder power output imbalance is ubiquitous in internal combustion engines and imparts potentially damaging vibrations that can reduce engine component life.  The experiments are being conducted in SwRI’s diesel engine test facility using a highly-instrumented Navistar six cylinder diesel engine.  Initial results are encouraging regarding the efficacy of the feedback signal processing techniques and adaptive control methods developed by Barron Associates.  This phase of the testing will conclude in December 2014.
